Hope After Loss

When tragedy strikes, it can rob your sense of hope. It tampers with your ability to believe in the best that life can offer. How can you be optimistic when you know the worst case scenario not only can happen but already has?

First, you have to deal with the grief and this can take a long time. Loss is a powerful event that can’t be swept under the rug. It’s important to talk to someone to sort out your feelings: a friend, support group, counselor, therapist, perhaps even your doctor. There are people out there who can help you through this process. You don’t have to go it alone.

Eventually, you’ll find your way back to happiness again. Whatever happened to you will no longer hold you prisoner, and the fear won’t compare to the freedom you feel to enjoy life to its fullest.

I don’t think we ever really get over a crisis or “move on”. Instead, we grow. We take all we’ve learned and continue growing. Trusting in the goodness of life is part of that. Instead of dreading the next calamity, we hope for impending joy. I know it’s difficult, but I also know it’s possible. I’ve seen it happen.

Death of a Christian

There is a grief that is biblical (1 Thess. 4:13), but it is different from that of the unbeliever. Why?

Well, first of all the believer who died has gained by his death (2 Cor 5), because he is now with Christ which is far better. Those believers he leaves behind grieve (he doesn’t), because they “lose” him. Grief has solely to do with those remaining behind—so they are sorry for themselves—that they no longer have his presence with them. But, unlike unbelievers, they know where he is and rejoice for him. At death (among believers), then, there is both gain and loss. Among unbelievers there is nothing but loss– for both the dying and for those left behind. There is no gain for anyone. What a difference!

Moreover, for the believer and his believing dead loved one, there is nothing permanent about the loss; he will be with his loved one once more when he goes to be with the Lord.

So the fundamental difference has to do with gain and loss—but what a difference it is!

On August 21, 2010, once again bikers and musicians join forces in Northeast Alabama and shift into high gear for a cause. North South Cycles of Fort Payne invites everyone to their 6th Annual “Thunder By The Canyon” Rally. This year all proceeds are going toward the DeKalb County Grief Support Group.

Thunder By The Canyon has for six years attracted motorcycle enthusiasts from all walks of life. From the casual riders to the “live to ride” bikers, some making the ride for their first time.

The ride is a stretch of road known to the locals as the “Viper.” The Viper winds and coils his self along the edge of beautiful Little River Canyon. With the many lookout points along the road and being atop picturesque Lookout Mountain, this makes for a cool and pleasant ride. With the Viper having many curves, dips, and a few hairpin turns, the stretch on road makes it a bikers dream, and a little tricky.

For those who dare not the trip, Thunder By The Canyon offers vendors of everything from leather to food, and after the last bike is in, there will be a benefit concert featuring some of the top bands and solo artist from the area. With everything from Gospel to rock with some country and bluegrass mixed in the entertainment is sure to please every musical taste.

One of the artists, Bonita Eileen, is the founder of DeKalb County Grief Support Group. Bonita has taken her experience of losing her own child and turn it into a ministry of music and support. In her words “When nothing else will do to soothe the soul, the perfect treat for some is the power of music ... those of you that may be experiencing the pain of loss, I will say to you that suffering will never leave you where it finds you; you will either become bitter or better!” The DeKalb County Grief Support Group is open free of charge to anyone suffering from grief, whether it be from a loss of a loved one, job loss, divorce, or any reason you are suffering. Bonita wants you to know, you don’t have to go it alone.

Brian and Kathy Johnson, owners of North South Cycles personally know how important support during the loss of a loved one can be, and hope to help not only raise funds but the much needed awareness.

Bands that have volunteered their time are Bonita Eileen, Kelli Johnson, Still Kickin, Nuthin Fancy, The Muddy Water Band, Tiffanie Miller, Shadow Academy, and more. Events will include a 50/50 drawing, Poker Run, and a Bike Contest along with raffle for some cool prizes.

General Admission is $10. Poker Run is $15 per bike and first bike out at 9am. This is an all day outdoor event so bring your lawn chairs and sunscreen with you. For more information please contact Kathy at North South Cycles 256-845-6626.

What is grief?

Grief is a natural response to loss. It's the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. You may associate grief with the death of a loved one – and this type of loss does often cause the most intense grief. But any loss can cause grief, including:

A relationship breakup
Loss of health
Losing a job
Loss of financial stability
A miscarriage
Death of a pet
Loss of a cherished dream
A loved one’s serious illness
Loss of a friendship
Loss of safety after a trauma

The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief. However, even subtle losses can lead to grief. For example, you might experience grief after moving away from home, graduating from college, changing jobs, selling your family home, or retiring from a career you loved.

Losing someone or something you love is very painful. After a significant loss, you may experience all kinds of difficult and surprising emotions, such as shock, anger, and guilt. Sometimes it may feel like the sadness will never let up. While these feelings can be frightening and overwhelming, they are normal reactions to loss. Accepting them as part of the grieving process and allowing yourself to feel what you feel is necessary for healing.

There is no right or wrong way to grieve — but there are healthy ways to cope with the pain. You can get through it! Grief that is expressed and experienced has a potential for healing that eventually can strengthen and enrich life.
